On Tuesday I posted about how you can determine your success by how you start each day. I had a few ask me why I seem to have cast e-mail as a villain, well mostly because it is. E-mail is one of those good-news, bad-news beasts. E-mail does deliver some clear-cut productivity benefits, but unmanaged, the gain comes at a greater loss. Email should serve, not disturb.
There is no doubt e-mail has been a massive plus to the way we communicate. Having had to rely on snail mail and then the greenscreen mainframe e-mails, I appreciate the improvement in communication. But e-mail, in its current format, is less than 25. We’re just beginning to understand how to deal with it and integrate into our lives. Unfortunately, e-mail is winning the battle and is dragging us into e-mail world, where we are at a disadvantage.
